Lady Gaga's fourth album "ARTPOP" was released on November 11th, 2013. This album's leaned even more towards the electronic sound that she repopularized with her previous albums. The title of the album was inspired by the "pop art" movement that was popularized by artist Andy Warhol, which combined pop culture with art. Gaga reversed this movement and made art with pop culture references. The cover art of the album features a sculpture of Gaga made by artist Jeff Koons, as well as "The Birth of Venus", which is referenced in the song "Venus" that features on the album.

Critics, however were divided with the album because many felt it was a step back in Gaga's artistic progression, and others felt it was trying too hard to have a cohesive theme that ultimately didn't work. As well, the release of the lead single of the album, "Applause", was changed to be released a week earlier because hackers had begun to leak the song all over the Internet.

The album was Gaga's first to not be nominated for any Grammys, but she received many nominations for her following albums. Fans rallied around the album, and since its release, it has become a fan favourite with many of the songs being performed at Gaga’s tours. The Twitter hashtags #JusticeforARTPOP and #BuyARTPOPoniTunes were created by fans in order to promote the album online since they felt that Gaga’s record label was doing a poor job of promoting the album and its singles “Applause”, “Do What U Want” and “G.U.Y.”
